Over the coming months we will be building a log home and sharing the steps, costs, and joys along the way at Log Home Today.
I guess you could call our house a cabin (since it is under 2,500 square feet), but our family and small and we're working toward sustainable living - leaving smaller footprints of our existance on the land.
The property itself is situated in a small town of Ontario. The reason for the log home build is a direct result of a house fire - that engulfed our home, possessions, keepsakes.
We'll build on a slight grade so the home will look quaint from the road, but will have a full walkout basement overlooking our horse pastures. There will be three floors in our log home, including the basement, which will not be finished until a few more years (if required).
Log construction will be 6" x 10" square log, milled at a local lumber yard. The roof will be steel, since I love to hear the sound of rain on a steel roof, day or night. The architectural drawing of the front of the house is below.
I'm looking for a stain that isn't quite as 'orange' as traditional log homes. Perhaps more of a honey shade - but that can stand up to our Canadian winters and UV rays. The stain also has to endure 5-7 years before re-coating.
The interior - shhh I haven't told my husband yet - will be a lighter stain again, perhaps a white wash if I can find an appropriate product.

Log Home Decorating
This will be the best part of building a new log home. I get to decorate it to my heart's desire.
Having been a home decorator for many years, and having many creative friends who also love decorating, we're already talking features, colors, furnishings, accessories...
Primitive decorating, country decorating, flea market finds and rustic styles have been my strengths in the past. The new log home decor will be an easy integration of all these styles with a rustic cabin twist that makes the entire experience fun.
